May 1--#2: "Snapshot of a modern learner"

Read the article, "Snapshot of  a modern learner." It can be found at http://smartblogs.com/education/2012/06/29/snapshot-modern-learner/

Comment on how much you are like or unlike Santos as well as whether you think that Santos is a realistic representation of most students in today's schools.

  1. santos i like some student here at lincoln but i dont think that technology is like air or water to us. he is obviously really into keeping up on his technology but it shouldnt get in the way for school and other activities. he doesnt really represent any of us. he obviously needs to learn that schools dont have the money for everything to be elctrical!

  2. I used to be like him until I lost my phone. I wasnt as bad as he was though I did text a lot too. I dont think he is a realistic representation of most schools today, you dont see people getting mad at pictures in books, or getting mad that they cant pause, rewind, or fast forward teachers on lectures.

  3. I actually find myself to be quite similar to santos, but more so in the his learning style and interest in school than in his connection to technology.

  4. I have a strong addiction to my phone, I always have it with me. But I do know when to put it away and talk to people and do my homework. I think with e increase in technology we will always have it, we just need to know when to use it and when not to and not to take advantage.

  5. I am like Santos because What we learn in school doesn't interest me like what I learn from the outside world. I do think Santos is like most students in todays world.

  6. In some ways he represents most school but others not so much. A lot of kids spend way to much time on their phones and some times I do too. Though we also don't get mad about reading out of books just carrying them around.

  7. We are living in the age of technology. It is becoming more and more common to use newer devices to do both schoolwork and homework. Schooling has been struggling to keep up with this ever changing world but at the same time some values such as proper speech and problem solving skills still must be taught and understood.

    1. I agree with your statement about how schools are struggling to keep up with the changing world. All schools, with the exception maybe of elementary schools, need to adapt to the technological age that we live without compromising their primary education, such as proper speech and problem solving skills, like you stated above.

  8. I am different than Santos more that I am the same. I do not have the dependence on technology that he has, at least not in my mind. I like the computer and the cell phone, sure, but I could live without it. I am similar to Santos in the way that, to me, school is "a giant check-off list." I do what is necessary to make it through and try to do my best on what I do but I don't really learn all that much because I am so busy just trying to pass. Most students are probably just like Santos, even if they won't admit it. They breathe technology and wouldn't survive without it. There are positives and negatives to that course. A negative is an inability to work without technology like math students unable to solve a problem without a calculator. A positive is preparation for the future. As stated in the article, our generation is learning about technology, not just how to use it, but how to fix it. This will help us in the future. I do agree that schools need to start using more technology in their classes. Not only would it be more proficient, if that is the right word, but it would also help students prepare for the future.

  9. Schools offer a lot of technology but it is very limited. Teachers show us things we can do with websites and other things that we could use everyday...if we were 30. But they don't show us things that would help us right now when were teenagers.

  10. I like him as a person. He sounds like a very intelligent kids but he likes technology to much. some day he is going to have to do something without technology and he is going to struggle. but he is a smart kid and can still get thru it.

  11. I think most students in the world are transitioning to santos' way of thinking. The world is constantly changing, for better or for worse. If he finds learning on his own time is what he likes doing and enjoys doing so he should embrace it. If he has goals for himself and is a responsible person there should be no reason why he wouldn't be a very successful person in the real world. I believe teaching yourself to learn something on your own time because you like to is more impressive than class when you "have to" study topics that dont pertain to you.

  12. Students should unlearn that being late for class is NOT okay

  13. Just like for Santos, technology is a big part of my life. This is true for almost every teen in America today. I only take an interest in technology for communication and entertainment purposes, though, not the science aspect of it. There are some students like Santos in schools today, but I don't think he represents the majority. Not everyone is so addicted to technology to the point of getting frustrated at the inability to pause a teacher's lecture in real life. While there are some major benefits from the use of technology in school, it wouldn't necessarily help to apply it to every subject and there are downsides to it as well.

  14. Im with Santos in i like learning outside of school. Teachers need to use technology more in the class room because when we graduate technology will be a huge part of society.

    1. I agree, life is changing in the outside world, so the way schools prepare for us for it should be changing with it.

    2. I agree with but I feel like there should be some limit on how much we use technology because in some cases people will use technology, such as the internet, as a wheelchair rather than a crutch. We should use it to help us not to cheat and what not.

  15. Most people I know are turning into santos because of how the world is changing so much so often He is just using his resources and learning new and up to date ways onto how to answer questions and look up words.

  16. Technology is such a big part of our society and we should never ignore it and not use it when its available. I think if someone finds something that they love to learn about like Santos did, then they should definitely build a career on that. There are people that are in a career that they hate and why? because their not interested. If people had a passion like Santos did they wouldn't have a problem in a career that matches that passion.

  17. I agree with wyatt technology has made a big impact on how school and society runs now day. I think if someone can teach themselves how to do somthing the love and technology and the internet help with that then why not let that person do what they want. I think what santos did was right because like santos I to am kind of addicted to technology and I have learned a lot of things off of the internet whether its wakeboarding or a math problem you can pretty much teach yourself because of the internet.

  18. I think Santos represents some people in this world today and how much they rely on technology. But we can't label that on every human. Not everyone even likes using modern technology. The technology world is constantly growing and i think people need to embrace it because this is what life is going to be like in 20 years.

  19. I think there's always going to be kids like santos in every school. As people learn and grow accustomed to using technology, there are some teaching methods that we will have to revise and update accordingly. But there will always be a place for traditional learning, too. I feel like I'm a little like Santos when it comes to using my phone all the time. I use it to keep me entertained and informed all day, and I'm pretty dependent on it for some things. But I'm not as bad as him, where I use it to solve my ever problem.

  20. I am a lot like Santos with the use of technology. Like using the internet to look up answers to questions, it just seems faster than looking them up in books. I always have my cell phone with me and feel lost without it. I also think that Santos is a very good representation of most students. Most use the internet to basically do their homework and interact with other people.

  21. I think I am nothing like Santos. I don't have the need for technology like him or feel the same way about school like he does. I feel he is a realistic representation of the students of today because of his attitude towards school and learning. Most of us are on our phones or the internet or even just using non-internet based technology. Our lives are changing because of the increase of technology and now, the youth of today are following in the internets foot steps.
